History

"Nagpur Association for the Rehabilitation of Children and Adults with Orthopedic and Other Disabilities" was formed in 1958 by combined efforts of the Nagpur branch of Indian Medical Association and the Crippled Children’s Committee of the Nagpur Rotary Club. The Association was registered with the Registrar of the societies Bombay on 18 July, 1956 No: B_ 56 (1950) and Bombay Public Trust act. 1950 No.: F – 410(N)

The main activities during the first year were to conduct a special clinic for children with residual deformities from polio myelities. In September, 1959 NARCAOOD started a school for cerebral palsy cases in small rented building. In 1960 government of Maharashtra, social welfare Deptt. Started a Crippled Children’s Home in Nagpur, thus there was no need for NARCAOOD to continue school in its original form. A new programme was evolved for the benefit of the children under-going long period of treatment in the Government medical college hospital, nagpur. This benefited good number of children mainly with plastic surgery and orthopedic cases, who were hospitalized for long periods ranging from 3 months to 1 year.

The work of NARCAOOD started in small rented building in Ramdaspeth, Nagpur. The Vocational Rehabilitation Administration (VRA), Department of Health, Education and Welfare, Washington 25, D.C., U.S.A. financed the VRA- NARCAOOD project NO OVR – INDI – Q24-62 under PL – 480 from 15th July 1962 – 31st July 1967, at NARCOD House, Ramdaspeth, Nagpur. Conducted periodic assessment and rehabilitation of the permanently disabled and surveys of “paraplegics under social and rehabilitation services (SRS) – NARCAOOD. The “Directory of Facilities” in Nagpur and its ‘Survey report’ published by NARCOD in 1967 and the final report published in 1972 speaks volumes of the work done by the Ex-Director Late Mrs. Kamala V. Nimbkar, Project Liason Officer during 1965-70’s.

The small cerebral palsy’ school of (1959) shifted to Shankar Nagar in its own building in 1970, Late Mrs. Kamala V. Nimbkar, started these facilities for the first time in Bombay (Mumbai) and Nagpur. The horizon of activities of the centre restricted to infants and children were widened to accommodate adults and hence NARCOD became NARCAOOD (Nagpur Association for the Rehabilitation of children and Adults with Orthopaedic and other disabilities).

1980’s onwards. Late Dr.Ms. Sushama Mahajan who joined in 1979-80 along with a very strong untiring and dedicated team of ‘Physiotherapists’ and other staff in unison with the valuable support of the Management gave a new meaning and direction to NARCAOOD.
